Frequently asked questions

What is classic car insurance?

It is specialized coverage for collector, antique, and classic vehicles that are driven occasionally rather than daily. Its defining feature is agreed value: you and the carrier set the car's value at the start, so a covered total loss pays that amount without the depreciation a standard policy applies.

What is agreed value coverage?

Agreed value means the payout after a covered total loss is the figure you and the insurer agreed on when the policy was written, supported by an appraisal or documentation. It avoids the disputes that come with actual cash value, where a standard insurer depreciates the car. For a restored or appreciating vehicle, that difference can be large.

Does my car qualify as a classic?

Carriers vary, but a common baseline is a vehicle of a certain age, kept in good condition, driven on a limited basis, and stored securely. Modified, exotic, and collector vehicles often qualify under related programs. Tell us the year, condition, and how you use it, and we confirm eligibility.

How much does classic car insurance cost?

It is frequently less than standard auto coverage, because the car is driven little and stored carefully. Cost reflects the agreed value, your driving record, storage, and any mileage limits. We quote it against the specific vehicle and how you use it rather than a flat rate.

Can I drive my classic car every day?

Usually not on a classic policy. These policies assume occasional, pleasure use, car shows, club events, and weekend drives, and many set an annual mileage expectation. A car used for commuting or errands generally needs a standard auto policy. We match the policy to your real usage.

Do I need an appraisal for classic car insurance?

Often, yes, especially for a restored or higher-value vehicle. An appraisal or strong documentation supports the agreed value and speeds a claim. For some vehicles photos and records are enough. We tell you what the carrier needs before you bind.

Does this policy cover daily driving and commuting?

Classic policies assume limited, pleasure use. A car driven daily belongs on a standard auto policy.

Does this policy cover wear and mechanical breakdown?

Maintenance, mechanical failure, and gradual deterioration are not insured losses.

Does this policy cover exceeding the mileage terms?

Some policies cap annual mileage, and routine over-use can fall outside coverage.

Does this policy cover racing and track use?

Competitive events and track days are generally excluded unless specifically arranged.

Can you write this where I live?

We are licensed in California, Texas, Pennsylvania and New York, and applications in Ohio, North Carolina and Michigan are with those states now. We do not quote a state before its license is issued. Start a quote and we will tell you where you stand before you spend time on it.

What actually happens after I start a quote?

You answer a short set of questions, and a licensed broker at Menlo reads them, maps your operation to a class, and shops it with the carriers we are appointed with. There is no instant bind and no black box. You talk to a person before anything is quoted.
