ACORD 70 is the Personal Policy Change Request for policies other than auto. An agency can use it to ask an insurer to add, remove, or correct information on a homeowners, dwelling, personal inland marine, watercraft, or other eligible personal policy. Sending the request does not make the change effective.

What is ACORD 70 used to change?

The form supports servicing changes to non-auto personal policies, including coverage initially described through a homeowners application such as ACORD 80. Common requests include correcting names or mailing details, changing a location or interest, updating property information, or requesting a coverage adjustment. The exact request depends on the policy and insurer. Vertafore identifies ACORD 70 separately from ACORD 71 and the commercial ACORD 175 change request.[1]

What should you include?

Identify the named insured, carrier, policy number, requested effective date, and the information to add, delete, or revise. Describe the change precisely. If a lender, additional interest, item, or location is involved, include the legal name and identifying details the agency requests. Attach supporting documents when the insurer requires them.

When does the change take effect?

Only when the insurer accepts and issues the change, or otherwise confirms it under its process. A submitted ACORD 70 is not a binder and does not rewrite the policy. Review the resulting endorsement or declarations for the effective date, coverage, limits, premium effect, and any unresolved request.

Does the form work for auto insurance?

No. The countrywide ACORD 70 title expressly excludes auto. Personal auto changes use ACORD 71 or an insurer's approved process. State-specific forms that share the number 70 may also serve a different purpose, so read the full identifier and title.

Frequently asked questions

Can ACORD 70 cancel a personal policy?

Use the insurer's required cancellation process. ACORD 70 is a general change request, but a cancellation may require a separate signed request and carrier-specific handling.

Is an email from the agent enough to prove the change?

An email can document the request or confirmation, but the revised policy documents show the contractual result. Keep both when timing matters.

The Bottom Line

Use ACORD 70 to communicate a precise non-auto personal policy change. Then verify the insurer's issued endorsement or declarations before relying on the change.
