ACORD 37 is the Statement of No Loss. An insurer or producer may request it when a policy has canceled or lapsed and the customer seeks reinstatement. The signer makes a factual statement about losses or circumstances during a specified period. The form is not a binder, and signing it does not prove that coverage was reinstated.
Why might an insurer request ACORD 37?
A no-loss statement is commonly associated with a request to reinstate a policy after cancellation or lapse. The insurer wants current information about whether a loss or circumstance arose while the policy was not active. A carrier may use ACORD 37, its own statement, or another underwriting process.
ACORD 37 is titled Statement of No Loss in a specialty insurance provider's application catalog.[1] Publicly available form instructions also identify it as a reinstatement-related statement and expressly say it is not an insurance binder.[2] Requirements still vary by insurer and policy.
What should you check before signing?
Confirm the named insured, policy number, cancellation date, requested reinstatement date, and the exact period covered by the statement. Then ask the people responsible for vehicles, locations, equipment, operations, and incident reporting whether anything occurred that could lead to a claim.
Do not limit the review to claims already reported. Property damage, an accident, an injury allegation, a demand letter, missing property, or another known circumstance may need to be disclosed even if no claim number exists. If the statement is not accurate, stop and explain the event to the producer or insurer. Do not change dates or omit an event to make the request easier to approve.
Does ACORD 37 reinstate insurance?
No. It supplies information the insurer may consider. The carrier can approve reinstatement, impose conditions, use a different effective date, or decline the request. ACORD itself does not provide insurance coverage or process claims.[3]
Until written confirmation arrives, treat coverage during the lapse and afterward as unresolved. A premium receipt also does not necessarily establish retroactive coverage. Ask for documentation that states the reinstatement effective date and whether any lapse remains. If replacement coverage is needed, confirm it is bound before relying on it.
Where can you get the official ACORD 37 form?
Eligible users can search the ACORD Forms Portal after login.[4] The insurer or producer requesting the statement should provide the current licensed form and define the period to review. This page does not offer a blank reproduction.
Frequently asked questions
What if an incident occurred but no claim was filed
Tell the producer or insurer before signing. The question can extend to circumstances that might lead to a claim, not only claims already assigned a number.
Does paying the overdue premium restore coverage automatically
Not necessarily. Obtain written insurer confirmation showing whether reinstatement was approved, the effective date and time, and whether any uncovered period remains.
The Bottom Line
ACORD 37 is a serious factual certification used in a reinstatement workflow. Verify the insured, policy, time period, and known events before signing. Submit complete information and retain the insurer's response. The statement helps underwriting decide what to do, but it is not insurance and does not erase a lapse on its own.
