ACORD 83 is the Personal Umbrella Application. It brings a requested umbrella limit together with the household's drivers, residences, vehicles, watercraft, recreational vehicles, underlying policies, and liability history. It helps an insurer evaluate the submission, but it is not a promise that a particular exposure or underlying policy will be accepted.

What does ACORD 83 collect?

Vertafore's current personal lines map identifies ACORD 83 as the Personal Umbrella Application.[1] An Oklahoma Insurance Department filing report identifies the revised 2012/02 edition and classifies it under personal umbrella and excess insurance.[2] The application records the requested umbrella amount and retention, primary policy information, operators, loss and violation history, and general liability questions.

Why do underlying policies matter?

An umbrella submission is reviewed in relation to primary insurance. ACORD 83 provides sections for policies such as personal auto, homeowners or dwelling fire, watercraft, recreational vehicle, and employers liability. Use the actual insurer name, policy number, dates, and limits from current evidence. Do not assume an expired declarations page represents the upcoming term.

The umbrella insurer may require certain underlying limits or decline to sit over a particular policy or exposure. The issued umbrella policy, not the application, explains its required underlying insurance and how a loss is handled if that insurance is unavailable.

What should an applicant verify?

Include every requested operator and match vehicles or watercraft to the people who use them. Disclose properties, vehicles, boats, aircraft, and other exposures that are owned, hired, leased, or regularly used when the question applies. Explain business or commercial use, noncompensated positions, farming, pending litigation, losses, and gaps in primary insurance accurately. If a question is unclear, ask before signing instead of guessing.

Does ACORD 83 bind umbrella coverage?

No. It is an application. An underwriter may request supporting schedules, change a proposed limit, exclude an exposure, or decline the risk. Coverage begins only when an authorized insurer or representative issues a binder or policy on stated terms. ACORD also says it is not an insurance company and does not provide coverage.[3]

Where can you obtain the form?

Eligible users can access current forms through ACORD's Forms Portal.[4] Complete the edition provided by the agency or authorized software, and keep attachments with the signed application.

Frequently asked questions

Is ACORD 83 a personal umbrella policy

No. It is an application used in underwriting. The binder, declarations, policy forms, and endorsements show the coverage that was issued.

Should an applicant list a vehicle covered by another insurer

Yes, when the application asks for it. The umbrella insurer needs a complete view of relevant exposures and the primary policies intended to sit underneath the umbrella.

The Bottom Line

ACORD 83 organizes a personal umbrella submission around the household's liability exposures and primary insurance. Reconcile every driver, item, policy, and limit with current records. Use the issued insurer documents to confirm coverage.
