Rain insurance for events is usually parametric: it pays a predetermined amount when rainfall measured at your location during the hours you insure reaches a threshold you choose, without you having to prove what the rain cost you. For example, Vortex's RainSure pays a share of the limit for every 0.01 inch of recorded rain and the full limit once the threshold is reached, such as 0.25 inch.[1] The rainfall comes from "a verifiable independent and localized source (not at an airport)."[2]

This guide explains how parametric rain insurance works, how to choose the time window, limit and threshold, when to buy it, and how it differs from event cancellation insurance and event liability insurance. To price rain cover for your California event, start from our rain insurance for outdoor events page.

What is parametric rain insurance?

Insurance that pays on a measurable weather event rather than on an adjusted loss. You agree in advance on the location, the time window, the coverage limit and the rainfall threshold. If the recorded rainfall during that window is at least as high as the agreed threshold, the policy pays.[2] Since there is no adjuster deciding how much the rain hurt your ticket sales, claims can be processed quickly; Vortex says payments are typically mailed in less than two weeks.[2]

Vortex's policies are underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance USA Inc., which is part of MS&AD Insurance Group.[2]

How does a rain insurance payout work?

It follows the rainfall table in the policy. Vortex's RainSure pays a predetermined percentage of the limit for any measurable rain of at least 0.01 inch during the policy period, increasing up to 100% at the threshold.[1] Its own examples on a $10,000 limit:

Threshold for full payoutPayout per 0.01 inchExample
0.25 inch4% of the limit ($400)0.16 inch recorded pays $6,400[1]
0.50 inch2% of the limit ($200)0.20 inch recorded pays $4,000[1]
1.0 inch1% of the limit ($100)0.50 inch recorded pays $5,000[1]

A lower threshold pays out for lighter rain and typically costs more; a higher one is typically cheaper but requires a much larger storm for the full limit. Choose the rainfall level that would actually hurt your event: for an outdoor wedding reception, a light shower may be enough to matter.

How do I choose the time window and limit?

Cover the hours that matter, not the whole day. Each of Vortex's coverage rows has its own start and end time in whole hours and its own coverage limit, and you can add rows for several days or several windows.[3] A farmers market might cover 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; a festival might cover two evenings. Set the limit close to the revenue or costs you would lose if rain hits: ticket sales, bar revenue, or non-refundable vendor and rental costs. Vortex's system allowed limits from $0 to $150,000 per row when Menlo walked it.[3]

When do I need to buy rain insurance?

Well before the event. In Vortex's quoting system, the earliest date you could insure was 15 days after the day of the quote and the latest was one year out.[3] Forecasts inside two weeks are exactly what an insurer can't let you buy against, so plan it when you book the venue.

Rain insurance vs. event cancellation vs. event liability

They cover different risks, and many outdoor events need more than one:

Frequently asked questions

How does rain insurance work?

You choose a location, hours, limit and rainfall threshold. If an independent local weather source records the threshold amount during your hours, the policy pays, with partial payouts for lighter rain on some policies.[1][2]

What does event weather insurance cover?

Parametric rain cover pays on measured rainfall. It doesn't cover injuries, property damage or cancellations for other reasons, which need event liability or cancellation insurance.[2]

How much does rain insurance cost?

It depends on the location's rainfall history, the dates and hours, the limit and the threshold. A lower threshold or a rainier season costs more. Vortex prices each quote after you set the coverage rows.[3]

Can I buy rain insurance the week of my event?

Usually not. Vortex's system started coverage no earlier than 15 days after the quote date.[3]

The Bottom Line

Parametric rain insurance pays a set amount when recorded rainfall at your location reaches the threshold during the hours you insure, with no proof of loss.[1][2] Choose the window, limit and threshold that match how rain would hurt your event, buy it at least a couple of weeks ahead, and keep event liability separate.[3]
