Start with the building, its vacancy and its condition

An application needs more than a building value. Vacancy duration, prior use, security, utilities and planned work help describe the property. The coverage requested and the property's circumstances still require underwriting review.

The vacant building

Describe construction, building and roof age, floor area, inspections, utilities and how the property is secured.

The protection requested

Identify building values, any business personal property or other structures, deductibles and whether premises liability is needed. Optional coverages are requests for review, not automatic inclusions.

Work and insurance history

Explain planned renovation or construction, contractor involvement, prior insurance and losses. List any mortgagees, loss payees or additional insureds that need to be considered.

What to have ready

  • The fully vacant commercial property's address and prior use
  • Building details, values and requested protection
  • Any renovation plans and contractor information
  • Prior insurance, loss information and the interests to be listed

What changes your premium

These details help insurers assess your business and price the coverage. Terms and available options vary by insurer.

  • How long the entire property has been vacant
  • Building location, construction, condition and value
  • Security, inspections, utilities and planned work
  • Requested coverage, deductibles and loss history

Questions we get asked

Can I use this application for a partly occupied building or an empty home?

No. This application is limited to fully vacant commercial property. Partly occupied property, residential buildings and farms need a separate scope review; do not describe them as fully vacant commercial property to use this form.

Discuss a different property need

Can I request a short policy term?

The application includes requests for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months. The available term, coverage and conditions are subject to underwriting; selecting a term does not guarantee an offer.

What if renovation or construction is planned?

Describe the work, its estimated cost and whether a contractor will perform it. Structural work and the contractor's liability coverage have separate questions. Answering them does not establish that the work is eligible.

Does completing the form give me a quote or put coverage in force?

No. It collects information for broker review. Required documents, carrier delivery, underwriting and any binding requirements still need handling. Completion is not an automatic carrier submission, an instant price or coverage in force.
